Abstract

Tetrahydrofuran (THF) is an organic solvent widely utilized in the chemical, pharmaceutical, coating, adhesive, resin, and elastomer industries, as well as serving as a raw material for the production of polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMEG). With the growth of downstream industries in Indonesia, the demand for Tetrahydrofuran continues to rise, yet supply still relies on imports. Therefore, establishing a Tetrahydrofuran plant in Indonesia is expected to reduce reliance on imported products while enhancing the value-added of the national industry. This preliminary design outlines a Tetrahydrofuran plant utilizing 1,4-butanediol via a dehydration process with a zirconium sulfate catalyst, featuring a production capacity of 50,000 tons per year. The plant is planned to operate continuously for 330 days annually and will be located in the Gresik Industrial Estate, East Java. The dehydration process was selected due to its high conversion and selectivity, relatively simple operating conditions, and the fact that it yields only water as a by-product, making it more environmentally friendly. The reaction takes place within a multitubular fixed-bed reactor. The plant is structured as a Limited Liability Company (PT) with a line-and-staff organizational system and employs 175 personnel. To support smooth production operations, various utility facilities are provided—including water, electricity, fuel, and compressed air supplies, as well as a waste treatment system—to meet the plant's operational requirements. Economic analysis indicates a Fixed Capital Investment (FCI) of Rp697,703,104,720 and a Working Capital Investment (WCI) of Rp426,530,642,730, resulting in a Total Capital Investment (TCI) requirement of Rp1,124,233,747,451. The Total Production Cost (TPC) required to operate the plant is Rp1,706,122,570,921 per year. Economic evaluation results indicate a Return on Investment (ROI) of 22.61% before tax and 16.95% after tax, an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 11.211%, and a Break-Even Point (BEP) of 30.09%. The IRR value, which exceeds the bank interest rate of 6%, indicates that the planned investment is feasible to implement.
