Abstract

Iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) concentrations in water exceeding quality standards can degrade water quality, necessitating effective treatment methods. One viable alternative is adsorption using rice husk carbon. This study aimed to analyze the effects of varying column surface area and water flow rate on Fe and Mn removal efficiency and adsorption characteristics—based on the Thomas model—within a continuous column adsorption system. Rice husk carbon served as the adsorbent medium, with column surface areas varied at 100 cm², 132.25 cm², 196 cm², and 400 cm², and water flow rates at 0.2 L/min, 0.5 L/min, and 1 L/min. Analyzed parameters included Fe and Mn removal percentages, breakthrough curves, the Thomas constant (Kth), and theoretical adsorption capacity (q0). The results demonstrated that rice husk carbon is capable of removing Fe and Mn in a continuous column adsorption system. The highest removal percentages for Fe (95.67%) and Mn (97.50%) were achieved with a column surface area of 100 cm² and a flow rate of 0.2 L/min. According to the Thomas model, Kth and q0 values were influenced by varying operating conditions, with optimal adsorption characteristics observed at a column surface area of 100 cm² and a flow rate of 0.2 L/min. In conclusion, variations in column surface area and water flow rate affect the removal efficiency and adsorption characteristics of Fe and Mn when using rice husk carbon in a continuous column adsorption system. Increasing the column surface area (while maintaining a constant adsorbent mass) and increasing the water flow rate resulted in decreased removal percentages and accelerated breakthrough and saturation times.
