Abstract

This study examines the interpersonal communication strategies used by basketball Coaches at DBL Academy in training students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The background of this study is grounded in the increasing number of children with special needs in Indonesia and the importance of adaptive interpersonal communication for Coaches in supporting the success of inclusive team sports training. The research problem addressed in this study is how Coaches implement interpersonal communication strategies during basketball training at DBL Academy for students with ASD and ADHD, as well as the obstacles Coaches encounter throughout the process. This study employs a descriptive qualitative. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving informants selected through purposive sampling, namely the Head Coach, Coaches, and parents of students at DBL Academy. The findings reveal that Coaches apply four main strategies: building closeness through openness and empathy, providing motivation through verbal praise, physical contact, and simple rewards, applying equal treatment between regular students and students with special needs, and using redundancy in delivering instructions through repetition. This study also identifies communication barriers stemming from student characteristics, such as mood changes, difficulty maintaining focus, and limited eye contact, as well as external factors such as the Coach-to-student ratio and Coaches' level of experience. The results of this study are expected to enrich the study of interpersonal communication in the context of inclusive sports and provide practical insights for Coaches in supporting students with special needs
