Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the discourse of menstruation in the film The Period of Her (2025). Menstruation is a biological process naturally experienced by women. However, society has not always perceived menstruation in this way. Instead, it has often been constructed through various stigmas and social norms that have shaped the way women's bodies were perceived. As a form of mass media, film played a role in representing and constructing the meaning of menstruation through its narratives, dialogues, and visual elements. Therefore, this study examined how The Period of Her constructed the discourse of menstruation. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a critical paradigm and Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis, which consisted of three dimensions: textual analysis, discursive practice, and sociocultural practice. The data were collected through documentation by identifying dialogues, visual representations, and cinematographic elements related to menstruation. The findings showed that The Period of Her constructed menstruation as a taboo subject that should not be openly discussed and as a factor that restricted women's participation in their daily activities.
