Abstract

Indonesia is known as a country rich in cultural diversity and regional languages. However, amid the tide of globalization and advances in information technology, cultural values and regional languages are slowly being forgotten, especially by the younger generation. Many of them view Indonesian culture as uninteresting. Today’s younger generation tends to be drawn to foreign cultures accessed through their mobile devices. This phenomenon is a major concern because culture is the nation’s identity that must be preserved. In response to this issue, the author’s Field Work Practice team designed an app called Explore Indonesia at the Dicoding Indonesia Foundation as part of the Bangkit Academy program. This app aims to introduce Indonesia’s regional cultures and languages in a more intuitive and interactive way to the general public, particularly the younger generation. The main features offered include information on regional cultures, regional language learning, and a user experience that is easily accessible via mobile devices. In addition, there is an OCR Translate feature based on machine learning, which enhances the user experience in learning regional languages. To support these functions, a system is required that can ensure efficient and reliable data exchange between the mobile app and the server. Therefore, this project developed a cloud-based REST API as the backend component using Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services. The primary objective of this Field Work Practice is to implement the REST API as a cloud-based backend infrastructure capable of supporting the needs of the Explore Indonesia app. The REST API development process was carried out through eight methodological stages. The first stage involved requirements gathering and analysis, which included identifying the requirements of the Explore Indonesia application to determine its key features based on survey results. The second stage was system and database design, which involved designing the system, including system design, architecture, and use case diagrams. Additionally, the database structure was designed to store the data required by the Explore Indonesia application. The third stage is REST API design, which involves designing API endpoints that are efficient, secure, and aligned with the application’s needs. The fourth stage, cloud architecture design, involves selecting the cloud services to be used, such as Google App Engine, Cloud Run, Firestore, and Cloud Storage for deployment as well as to support data processing and media storage. The fifth phase, database implementation, involves deploying the database using Firestore to store application data with high performance and good scalability, and Cloud Storage to store application media as previously designed. The sixth phase, REST API development, involves implementing a REST API capable of handling data requests from the mobile app and providing appropriate responses based on those requests. The next step after implementing the REST API is to deploy the cloud-based REST API using a CI/CD pipeline to ensure that the deployment of the ML REST API on Cloud Run is automated, efficient, and easily integrated with code changes on GitHub. The final step is testing the REST API, which includes functional testing using Postman to ensure that every endpoint functions correctly, including input validation, API responses, and integration with third-party services such as the Cloud Translation API. The results of this internship project demonstrate that the cloud-based REST API developed successfully meets the needs of the Explore Indonesia application. The APIs deployed using GCP services, such as App Engine for general APIs and Cloud Run for machine learning-based APIs, operate effectively and efficiently. Furthermore, testing showed that the REST API can handle communication between the application and the server with low latency, support data processing, and provide fast and reliable access to the application’s features. This success reflects the great potential of cloud technology in supporting the development of culture-based applications in Indonesia. With cloud-based infrastructure, the Explore Indonesia application can be further expanded to reach more users and make a tangible contribution to the preservation of local culture. Therefore, this project provides a solid foundation for the development of similar applications in the future, while also serving as a concrete step toward leveraging modern technology to preserve Indonesia’s cultural heritage.
