Abstract
Dating violence remains a pressing social issue in Indonesia, as evidenced by data from Komnas Perempuan recording 445,502 cases of violence against women in 2023, with dating violence being among the least recognized forms due to its concealment within narratives of love and affection shaped by patriarchal culture. This study aimed to examine female audiences' reception of the representation of dating violence depicted in the film Heartbreak Motel, specifically by analyzing the reading positions adopted by informants based on their social backgrounds and lived experiences. A qualitative approach was employed using Stuart Hall's encoding-decoding reception analysis model. Data were collected through a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) involving six female informants from three distinct groups, namely violence survivor advocates, university students, and members of the general public, all of whom possessed awareness or personal experience related to dating violence. Data were analyzed using Hall's three audience reception positions: dominant-hegemonic, Negotiated, and oppositional. The findings revealed that all informants recognized the relationship between Malik and Ava as abusive, characterized by verbal, emotional, digital, and physical violence rooted in gender-based power imbalances. Audience reception was dominated by the dominant-hegemonic position, in which informants accepted the film's primary message that such violence is embedded in patriarchal structures, while the Negotiated position emerged selectively regarding the realism of certain scenes, and no oppositional position was identified. This study confirmed that film functions as a cultural text that provides women with a space for reflection and validation of their experiences of intimate partner violence, while also contributing to the development of reception analysis studies within the context of gender-based violence in Indonesia.
