Abstract
This study examines the representation of political elites in three videos published on the Malaka Project YouTube channel. The low level of political literacy among the public makes people more susceptible to inaccurate political information, making political-themed YouTube content an important alternative medium for improving public understanding of politics. This study aims to analyze the representation of political elites on the Malaka Project YouTube channel using John Fiske's television semiotics analysis. The research objects consist of three videos: Understanding Danantara Made Easy, Aid Distribution Report for Sumatra, and People's Anger Is Not a Crime. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach by analyzing Fiske's three levels of semiotics: reality, representation, and ideology. The findings indicate that the representation of political elites is constructed through various codes across John Fiske's three levels of analysis. At the reality level, representation is conveyed through the talents' appearance, dialogue, gestures, facial expressions, clothing, and setting. At the representation level, meaning is constructed through production techniques such as camera work, editing, illustrations, text, music, and narrative. At the ideological level, Malaka Project represents political elites as actors who possess the authority to formulate and implement public policies. However, the governance system is portrayed as still requiring evaluation and improvement to better serve the public interest. The study also shows that YouTube functions as a medium for meaning-making as well as a platform for political literacy, encouraging the public to understand public policies more critically.
