Abstract
Film and society are interconnected in shaping public understanding of various social phenomena, including adolescent identity crises. During adolescence, individuals undergo a process of identity formation that involves self-meaning, past experiences, and relationships with their social environment. Experiences of loss and life in an orphanage provide an important context that influences how adolescents are represented in film. This study aims to examine how the film A Letter to My Youth represents the identity crisis of an orphanage adolescent through the character of Kefas. Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis was employed to examine how signs construct meaning at the levels of denotation, connotation, and myth. The analysis was conducted on eight corpora by examining dialogues, characters' actions, interpersonal relationships, and cinematic elements that contribute to meaning construction in the film. Stuart Hall's theory of representation and Erik Erikson's psychosocial development theory were used to interpret the identified representations of identity crisis. The findings show that A Letter to My Youth represents Kefas’ identity crisis through his inability to make sense of social relationships and his attachment to past experiences that shape his sense of self. This pattern continues into Kefas' adulthood through his emotional withdrawal in relationships with those closest to him. However, the film later portrays a formation of his identity. At the level of myth, the film constructs identity crisis as a condition that appears to be a natural consequence experienced by orphanage adolescents as a result of losing their families
