Abstract

Urbanization and the fast-paced rhythm of urban life have contributed to increasing stress and mental health problems, while access to restorative natural experiences has become increasingly limited. Malang City, with its relatively cool climate and strong tourism character, has the potential to support the development of a city resort as a place for recovery and recreation. This design adopts the theme “Biophilic Japanese Oasis,” an urban resort with a Japanese atmosphere that integrates the principles of Biophilic Architecture to create a calm, contemplative, and nature-oriented environment. The site is located in Tunjungsekar Subdistrict, Lowokwaru District, Malang City. The design method includes literature and precedent studies, site analysis, concept formulation, alternative exploration, and a directed trial-and-error process. The resulting design is a city resort complex consisting of 30 accommodation units categorized into Family, Suite, and VIP types, supported by recreational facilities, communal spaces, and service areas. Biophilic principles are applied through vegetation, water elements, natural lighting and ventilation, and nature-inspired materials combined with Japanese architectural characteristics. The design is expected to support relaxation and strengthen the connection between users and nature.
