Abstract
The MICE (Meeting, Incentive, Convention, and Exhibition) industry plays a significant role in driving economic growth. According to the Yogyakarta City Regional Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMD) 2025–2029, the development of facilities supporting economic activities is one of the region’s primary development priorities. Yogyakarta also enforces architectural design regulations that emphasize the visual character of each urban district. Accordingly, a Symbolic Architecture approach is adopted to reinforce local identity through the application of architectural symbols that respond to the surrounding cultural and environmental context. The selection of the project site serves as the basis for determining the architectural symbols employed, ensuring their compatibility with the character of the area. The objective of this project is to design the Yogyakarta Convention & Exhibition as a commercial facility capable of accommodating MICE activities and recreational functions through an efficient spatial organization, well-planned circulation, and a high degree of flexibility for various event types. Furthermore, the design aims to establish the Yogyakarta Convention & Exhibition as a city landmark that represents the cultural identity of Yogyakarta through the implementation of the Symbolic Architecture approach. The project is located within the buffer zone of the Keraton Yogyakarta Cultural Heritage Area (Kawasan Cagar Budaya/KCB), requiring the adoption of the Indische architectural style in accordance with the area's architectural design guidelines. The design employs the Iconic Design method, which focuses on creating a distinctive and recognizable architectural identity that represents the city's character while adhering to the principles of Indische architecture. The resulting design reflects the local architectural character through the reinterpretation of symbolic elements of the Indische style, integrated with Postmodern architectural principles to accommodate contemporary architectural developments. This approach creates a balance between preserving historical values and responding to current architectural trends. Keywords: Yogyakarta, Convention & Exhibition, Symbolic Architecture, Iconic Design.
