Abstract
Bhinneka Park Surabaya is an educational tourism destination based on the values of diversity, aiming to introduce cultural diversity, tolerance, and national unity through miniature traditional houses and houses of worship. However, studies on the development of interpretive media in diversity-themed parks remain limited, even though interpretive media play an important role in conveying educational messages to visitors. This study aims to analyze the forms and characteristics of interpretive media, evaluate their conformity with interpretive principles, and identify the gaps between existing conditions and ideal interpretive principles in order to formulate development recommendations. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through observation, semi structured interviews with park management and visitors, and documentation. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing based on Freeman Tilden’s interpretation theory, Sam H. Ham’s Thematic Interpretation model, and the interpretive media classification proposed by Beck and Cable. The findings indicate that the interpretive media at Bhinneka Park Surabaya consist of personal media in the form of tour guides and non-personal media, including information boards, signage, and banners. These media support the park’s educational function; however, they have not yet been fully optimized because the information provided remains general and the distribution of interpretive media is uneven. The study concludes that more structured and thematic interpretive media, supported by digital technology, are needed to strengthen the role of Bhinneka Park Surabaya as an educational public space that promotes diversity.
