Abstract

The upstream area of the Opak Watershed, located on Mount Merapi’s slopes, faces land degradation challenges caused by volcanic activity and land-use changes. This study evaluates soil damage status in the Opak Sub Watershed through field surveys and laboratory analyses. Soil samples were collected from four land types: primary forest, secondary forest, mixed gardens, and horticultural farms. Results reveal minor soil damage across all land types, with primary limiting factors being low organic matter content, reduced redox potential (Eh), and high soil porosity. Anthropogenic factors such as chemical fertilizer use and intensive land management exacerbate these issues. Conservation strategies, including cover cropping, organic fertilizer application, and sustainable land management practices, are recommended to improve soil quality in the Opak Sub-Watershed area.
