Abstract
The increasing elderly population in Yogyakarta, which reached 15.46% with a dementia prevalence of 20.1%, contrasts with the limited number of registered specialized care facilities, creating a significant gap between the need and availability of services. The design of the Dementia-Friendly Griya Wredha aims to produce a comprehensive elderly care facility design using a Therapeutic Architecture approach based on four main principles: Care in Community, Design for Domesticity, Social Valorization, and Integrated with Nature. The Pattern-Based Framework method is applied to adopt proven design solutions from three case studies adapted to the local context of Yogyakarta. The design produces the concept of "Healing Home of Memory for Dignified Elderly Living" on a 17,300 m² site on Jalan Dusun Pare 4, Godean, with a capacity of 140 elderly people organized in cluster and linear patterns. The design includes a safe wandering loop system, wayfinding based on color contrast and visual landmarks, integration of a multisensory therapeutic garden, and adaptation of Javanese vernacular architecture to create familiarity. The design results demonstrate that integrating a therapeutic approach into every design element—from zoning and circulation to materials and landscaping—can create an environment that is not only safe and functional but also actively supports memory maintenance, independence, and a dignified quality of life for seniors with dementia.
