Abstract
This special assignment discusses the preparation of a process flowsheet and mass balance calculation for a sugar factory with an operating capacity of 6800 TCD (Ton Cane per Day). The study was conducted to comprehensively describe the processing flow of sugar cane into white crystal sugar, starting from the milling, purification, evaporation, crystallization, centrifugation, and by-product handling stations. The preparation of the flowsheet aims to provide a systematic representation of the relationship between process units, material flows, and the distribution of products and by-products within the sugar factory. The mass balance data serve as an important basis for evaluating process performance, particularly in determining sugar extraction efficiency, raw material utilization, and the potential for increasing production capacity. Furthermore, the calculation results can be used as a reference for process control, production planning, and optimization of energy and utility consumption in sugar factories, thereby enabling production processes to operate more effectively and efficiently. Based on the mass balance calculation results, the operating capacity of 6800 TCD is equivalent to 309.09 tons of sugar cane per hour. The calculations were carried out for all mass flows entering and leaving each process stage to determine the mass equilibrium and processing efficiency of the raw materials. The mass balance results indicate that the milling and purification processes are capable of producing SHS sugar as the main product at a rate of 23.7765 tons/hour. In addition, by-products in the form of molasses amounting to 16.20779 tons/hour and filter cake (blotong) amounting to 9.4988 tons/hour are also generated. These by-products still possess economic value and can be further utilized as raw materials for other industries or for agricultural applications.
