Abstract

The increasing demand for food along with population growth has caused the demand for fertilizers, especially urea, to continue rising in Indonesia. However, domestic production capacity, which has not yet fully met national needs, still necessitates the import of urea. Therefore, the preliminary design of a urea plant becomes one of the strategic alternatives to support national food security, increase the added value of the chemical industry, and reduce dependence on imported products. The urea plant in this design uses ammonia (NH₃) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) as the main raw materials, with Stamicarbon CO₂ stripping process technology chosen based on considerations of energy efficiency, high reaction conversion rates, and ease of operation compared to other alternative technologies. The production process involves several main stages, namely raw material preparation, ammonium carbamate formation under high pressure, urea synthesis in a reactor, the stripping process for separation of unreacted reactants, purification and recovery stages, concentration through evaporation, as well as a finishing stage using a prilling tower to produce prilled urea products according to industry standards. Determination of production capacity is carried out based on the analysis of national urea consumption, production, export, and import data, resulting in a design capacity of 150,000 tons/year with a target operation year of 2030. The plant location is planned in the Gresik area considering the availability of raw materials, utilities, transportation access, and proximity to the market. Through this preliminary design, it is expected to obtain an overview of the technical and economic feasibility of building an efficient and sustainable urea plant, as well as being able to provide a significant contribution to the development of the national fertilizer industry.
