Abstract
The Butyl Acrylate Factory was established to meet the growing domestic industrial demand and reduce dependence on imported products. Butyl acrylate is an important chemical widely used as a raw material for paints, adhesives, surface coatings, textiles, sealants, and polymer emulsions due to its flexibility, good adhesion, and resistance to weather and chemicals. The raw materials used in the production process include acrylic acid, n-butanol, and a sulfuric acid catalyst, while the manufacturing process uses liquid-liquid esterification technology. The factory's capacity is set at 60,000 tons/year, and the location of the factory was chosen in Cilegon, Banten, due to its proximity to raw material sources, adequate utility access, and good industrial and transportation infrastructure. The Butyl Acrylate Factory uses an esterification process between acrylic acid and n-butanol in a stirred tank reactor (CSTR). The reaction takes place in the liquid phase with the aid of a sulfuric acid catalyst to accelerate ester formation. The process is carried out at a specific temperature and pressure to optimize the reaction conversion and minimize the formation of by-products. The reaction product, a mixture of butyl acrylate, water, residual reactants, and catalyst, is then channeled to the separation unit. The purification stage is carried out using a distillation tower to separate the main product from the residual butanol. The residual butanol is recycled back into the process to improve raw material efficiency and reduce production costs.
