Abstract

This design study is driven by the imbalance in children's literacy media, where storybooks circulating in the market often ignore the needs of children with partial color blindness. This is reinforced by field observations that found a lack of literacy media aimed at partially colorblind children. This condition allows it to inhibit children in enjoying the visual of books and children's motor development and triggers stigma and lack of empathy among peers socially. Therefore, this research emphasizes the need for media that fairly displays the beauty of nature to children who are partially colorblind, as well as an educational medium that is easy for children to understand. The qualitative approach was used as a methodology that included three main data collection techniques, namely in-depth interviews on color blindness, observations to analyze children's book design trends and market gaps, and literature studies. The collected data is then analyzed to determine the direction and strategy of designing this book. The resulting concept is an interactive children's storybook based on visual accessibility, children's motor development, and the formation of empathy attitudes. Its implementation involves the application of a partial color blind-friendly color scheme with interactive features that act as motor triggers in children. This design is expected to produce innovative and functional literacy media for children who are partially colorblind. Books not only serve as an effective visual aid for partially colorblind children to interact with stories, but also as a social connecting medium that fosters better empathy, tolerance, and acceptance in children.
