Abstract

Children aged 9–11 are in a transitional stage from concrete to logical thinking. At this age, they begin to develop curiosity about themselves and start recognizing differences in interests and abilities compared to their peers. However, many children in this age group have not yet been able to grasp the concepts of self, interest, and talent due to a lack of learning materials that support self-exploration in an engaging way. Learning materials used in schools are often traditional and unappealing to children, which diminishes their motivation and enthusiasm for learning. Furthermore, primary education in Indonesia tends to place heavy emphasis on linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligence, while other forms of intelligence receive less attention. This design project employs a qualitative method, with data collected through interviews and observation, then analyzed using the 5W+1H method. The interviews were conducted with teachers, parents, students, a children’s book illustrator, and a child and adolescent clinical psychologist. Group interviews were held with fourth-grade students from SD Negeri Gamping 2 Krian and MI Nurul Ulum Grabagan. Observations were conducted at schools and bookstores (both physical and online). In addition to primary data, secondary data were obtained from literature sources (journals, books, and previous studies) and mass media (online news sites). The results indicate that children aged 9–11 understand self-concepts more effectively through concrete (hands-on) and visual activities. They also demonstrate a high interest in media featuring bright colors and interactive features. The design concept was developed into an interactive illustrated book centered on self-exploration and using light, positive language. The book combines narrative and interactive elements to encourage children to explore themselves actively and meaningfully. This design is intended to serve as an alternative educational and entertaining learning medium, supporting the development of children’s potential at the elementary school level, as well as providing a useful tool for teachers and parents in guiding children to better understand themselves.
