Abstract
Delayed graduation is an issue experienced by students who exceed the expected period of study. This condition is not only related to academic obstacles, but may also lead to stigma, social labeling, comparison with peers, and negative self-evaluation. This study aims to identify and understand self-negotiation toward the stigma of delayed graduation among students who exceed the expected period of study at UPN Veteran Jawa Timur. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through in-depth interviews with eight informants who met the research criteria. The analysis refers to Stella Ting-Toomey’s Identity Negotiation Theory, Howard Becker’s Labeling Theory, and Leon Festinger’s Social Comparison Theory. The findings show that students who exceed the expected period of study interpret delayed graduation in various ways, namely as a personal shortcoming, as part of a life process, and as the result of external factors. Academic, personal, social, and institutional experiences also shape how students understand delayed graduation and evaluate themselves. The forms of self-negotiation that emerged include acceptance and reinterpretation, the principle of endurance, self-affirmation, focus regulation, external attribution, strong self-motivation, and self-recovery. This study concludes that self-negotiation toward the stigma of delayed graduation occurs in diverse and contextual ways, depending on students’ experiences, sources of obstacles, and how they position themselves amid social and academic pressures.
