Abstract

Over long-term operation, gas turbines experience performance degradation due to component wear, fouling, and deposit accumulation on turbine blades. To restore performance and maintain operational reliability, periodic maintenance such as overhauls is required. However, quantitative studies evaluating the effectiveness of overhauls while considering variations in operational load remain limited. This study employs a comparative quantitative method to evaluate gas turbine performance before and after overhaul based on air–fuel ratio, specific fuel consumption, heat rate, and thermal efficiency under three different load conditions. The results indicate a clear improvement in AFR across all load variations after overhaul, with the closest approach to stoichiometric conditions occurring at a load of 235 MW, where the AFR reached 14.79. Specific fuel consumption consistently decreased after overhaul, achieving its lowest value of 0.167 kg/kWh at 235 MW. Similarly, the heat rate showed a consistent reduction following overhaul, with the minimum value of 7,917.83 kJ/kWh recorded at the highest load. In line with these improvements, thermal efficiency increased across all operating loads after overhaul, reaching a maximum value of 45.47% at 235 MW. These findings demonstrate that overhaul activities effectively restore gas turbine performance toward its original design condition and enhance the efficiency of thermal-to-electrical energy conversion. Furthermore, the results indicate that increasing operational load tends to be associated with improved gas turbine performance up to an optimal operating point.
