Abstract
As an effort to support overhauling activities and prevent degradation in thermal performance that may affect system reliability, this study aims to evaluate the temperature distribution of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger at PT Paiton Operation and Maintenance Indonesia using a numerical analysis approach. The main research problem focuses on how to evaluate the temperature distribution within the equipment based on numerical simulation results. The research methodology employs ANSYS Fluent for numerical simulations and ANSYS SpaceClaim for 3D geometric modeling, with the analyzed variables including temperature distribution and the Number of Transfer Units (NTU). The results indicate that the simulation reached steady-state conditions during the grid independence test with a total of 2.17 million elements. Numerical data reveal significant transient temperature fluctuations, with the highest temperature reaching 621.362 K at 01:00 and the lowest temperature recorded at 492.892 K at 05:00. The discussion shows that thermal performance is highly dependent on sensible heat, resulting in extreme efficiency variability between peak load conditions and the lowest operational points. In conclusion, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis is proven to be effective in visualizing detailed temperature distributions and identifying zones with low heat transfer. The effectiveness–NTU approach applied in this study provides a comprehensive performance evaluation framework for future optimization of heat exchanger system operations.
