Abstract
Wastewater produced from the Sewage Sludge Treatment Plant (IPLT), particularly the Oxidation Ditch unit, generally still contains high levels of hazardous substances that are dangerous if discharged directly into water bodies without prior treatment, as this can cause environmental pollution, reduce water quality, and increase the risk of health problems for the community. These hazardous substances include total coliform (6000 number/100 mL), COD (627 mg/L), and TSS (344 mg/L). One advanced treatment technology that can treat IPLT Oxidation Ditch wastewater to improve its quality is Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs). AOPs are known as efficient treatment technologies because they can produce hydroxyl radicals (•OH) that have very high oxidation and are non-selective to various types of pollutants. One type of AOPs that is often used is Photofenton, which is a combination of the Fenton reaction and UV light. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the Photofenton method at the outlet unit of the IPLT Oxidation Ditch in Keputih, Surabaya, on the parameters of Total coliform, COD, and TSS. The study was conducted using variations in the molar ratio of FeSO4 to H2O2, UV light power, and sampling time to obtain the optimum conditions for the Photofenton process. Based on the study, a Total coliform removal rate of 98%, COD of 82%, and TSS of 60% were obtained under optimal conditions with a molar ratio of FeSO4:H2O2 of 1:15, UV lamp irradiation power of 20 watts, and a sampling time of 60 minutes. The results of this study indicate that the Photofenton method has great potential as an advanced treatment for IPLT Oxidation Ditch wastewater that is environmentally friendly and improves effluent quality so that it meets quality standards before being discharged into water bodies.
