Abstract
Batik is one of Indonesia's cultural heritages that has been recognized by UNESCO. Although the batik industry contributes significantly to the economy, the batik production process also generates waste that has the potential to pollute the environment. The characteristics of batik waste include high temperature, unstable pH, and high biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total suspended solids (TSS). In addition, this waste also contains significant concentrations of dyes. Therefore, batik wastewater treatment is essential before it is discharged into the aquatic environment. One method that can be used is electrocoagulation, an electrochemical process that works by destabilizing pollutant charges through an electric current that causes metal dissolution on the electrodes. The dissolved electrodes then interact with hidrogen to form in-situ coagulants. Electrodes serve to conduct electric current into the solution and trigger chemical reactions, and can be arranged in series or parallel configurations, either monopolar or bipolar. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of series and parallel monopolar electrode configurations using electrocoagulation technology. The electrocoagulation process was carried out in batches with variations in electrode configuration, voltages of 6 and 9 volts, and contact times of 30-90 minutes. The results of the study showed that the parallel monopolar configuration with the longest contact time demonstrated better performance than the series monopolar configuration, with a methylene blue penyisihan efficiency of 95.23%, methyl red penyisihan efficiency of 90.02%, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) penyisihan efficiency of 71.21%. In addition, higher voltages also resulted in higher penyisihan percentages.
