Abstract
This internship report presents an evaluation of the performance efficiency of Heat Exchanger 02 (HE-02) at the refinery unit of the Human Resources Development Center for Oil and Gas (PPSDM Migas) Cepu. The internship was conducted from December 1 to December 31, 2024, with the objective of understanding refinery operations and assessing the operational effectiveness of heat exchanger equipment used in the atmospheric crude oil distillation process. Heat Exchanger 02 plays a critical role in preheating crude oil by utilizing thermal energy from hot products, thereby improving energy efficiency and reducing fuel consumption in downstream units. The evaluation was carried out by collecting operational data, including inlet and outlet temperatures, pressures, flow rates, and physical properties of the process fluids. These data were subsequently analyzed using heat transfer and energy balance calculations to determine the actual heat transfer rate, overall heat transfer coefficient, and thermal efficiency of the heat exchanger. The results were then compared with design specifications and standard performance criteria. The analysis indicates that Heat Exchanger 02 operates within acceptable performance limits, although a decrease in efficiency was observed due to factors such as fouling, heat losses, and deviations in operating conditions. Despite these limitations, the equipment remains functional and contributes effectively to the refinery’s heat recovery system. This evaluation highlights the importance of routine monitoring and maintenance to sustain optimal heat exchanger performance and improve overall process efficiency in refinery operations.
