Abstract
The increasing demand for oxalic acid dihydrate in Indonesia has not been supported by adequate domestic production, resulting in a high dependence on imports. This final project aims to design a preliminary plant for oxalic acid dihydrate production using porang flour as the raw material through a carbohydrate hydrolysis–oxidation process with nitric acid. Porang flour was selected due to its high starch content, abundant availability, and renewable characteristics. The plant is designed with a capacity of 75,000 tons per year under continuous operation, involving starch hydrolysis into glucose using sulfuric acid, oxidation of glucose into oxalic acid using nitric acid with vanadium pentoxide and ferric sulfate as catalysts, followed by concentration, crystallization, separation, and drying stages. The design study includes process selection, mass and heat balance calculations, equipment design, utilities, occupational safety, and economic analysis. The economic evaluation indicates that the plant is feasible, with an Internal Rate of Return of 11.73%, a Pay Back Period of 2 years and 7 months, and a Break Even Point of 30.29%.
