Abstract

A strategic chemical product is disodium phosphate heptahydrate (Na₂HPO₄·7H₂O). This compound is used in various applications, such as an additive in detergents, a buffering agent in the pharmaceutical industry, and an emulsifying agent in the food industry. With the increasing industrial demand for this chemical, domestic production of disodium phosphate heptahydrate is crucial to reduce dependence on imports. A disodium phosphate heptahydrate plant using sodium chloride and phosphoric acid as raw materials through a crystallization process, with a capacity of 50,000 tons per year, will be established in the JIIPE Industrial Estate, Gresik, Jalan Raya Manyar KM 11, Manyarejo, Manyarsidorukun, Manyar Sido Rukun, Manyar District, Gresik Regency, East Java 61151. The production of disodium phosphate heptahydrate via the crystallization process consists of five stages: the reaction stage, purification stage, crystallization stage, separation stage, and drying stage. In the reaction stage, phosphoric acid reacts with a sodium chloride solution under liquid–liquid conditions in a Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) at an operating temperature of 95°C and a pressure of 1 atm. The molar ratio of reactants between phosphoric acid and sodium chloride is 1:2. The concentration process is carried out by feeding the reaction product into an evaporator, where it is concentrated at a pressure of 1 atm and a temperature of 100°C. In the crystallization process, the concentrated disodium phosphate solution is then fed into a crystallizer and cooled using a coolant temperature of 40°C to obtain heptahydrate crystals, where disodium phosphate heptahydrate is formed as crystalline solids with the chemical formula Na₂HPO₄·7H₂O. In the separation stage, the product leaving the crystallizer is a mixture of crystals and mother liquor, which is then separated using a centrifuge. The mother liquor is recycled back to the evaporator, while the wet disodium phosphate heptahydrate crystals are fed into a rotary dryer. The drying stage is carried out in a rotary dryer to produce a product with a moisture content of 0.2%, assisted by hot air that flows counter-currently through the dryer. Finally, the dried Na₂HPO₄·7H₂O crystals are cooled using a cooling conveyor to 30°C, after which they proceed to the packaging process.
