Abstract

The development of digital media, particularly YouTube, has transformed the way people access and interpret mystical stories and urban legends that previously circulated through oral traditions. One urban legend that has undergone this transformation into digital content is Jelangkung, which is frequently featured by horror content creators, including Nadia Omara. However, academic studies examining how audiences receive and interpret the mysticism of Jelangkung in YouTube content remain limited. This study aims to analyze audience reception of Jelangkung mysticism in Nadia Omara’s YouTube content using Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding theory. This research employs a qualitative approach with a reception analysis method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with six informants who are viewers of Jelangkung-related content on Nadia Omara’s YouTube channel. The findings indicate that audiences generally possess prior knowledge of Jelangkung before watching the content; therefore, the videos do not significantly alter their perspectives but instead provide additional information and reinforce existing understandings. Audience reception is categorized into three reception positions: dominant-hegemonic, negotiated, and oppositional. In the dominant-hegemonic position, one informant fully accepts the mystical meanings of Jelangkung as presented in the content. In the negotiated position, three informants partially accept the mystical meanings but do not fully believe in them, interpreting Jelangkung primarily as cultural knowledge or entertainment. In the oppositional position, two informants reject the mystical meanings offered and perceive Jelangkung content solely as entertainment without any spiritual belief. This study concludes that audiences actively construct meaning when engaging with Jelangkung mysticism, and that in the digital era, Jelangkung mysticism is understood not only as a spiritual belief but also as a form of entertainment and popular cultural consumption.
