Abstract

This research is motivated by the controversy surrounding the TikTok trend “Kita usahakan shade 00 itu” ("Let's aim for that shade 00") which has sparked discourse and debate about female beauty standards based on skin color on digital platforms. The “Kita usahakan shade 00 itu” trend has elicited various responses, ranging from support to criticism rejecting the glorification of fair skin as the ideal beauty. The purpose of this study is to uncover the construction of female beauty discourse within this trend. The method used is qualitative digital discourse analysis with Rodney H. Jones's approach, which analyzes four elements, includings text, context, action-interaction, and power and ideology across 16 selected content pieces posted from June to August 2025. The main findings indicate that the beauty construction within the trend reproduces standards of fair skin and full makeup as the ideal beauty image, which is internalized and upheld by many female users on TikTok. The trend promotes a beauty image of fair skin symbolized by the term "shade 00". However, counter-discourse also forms within the trend through the rejection of skin color hierarchies and support for inclusive beauty. The implications of the research point to the importance of critical media literacy for users and the responsibility of content creators in fostering more inclusive beauty discourse on digital platforms like TikTok.
