Abstract

This study examines the polarization of public opinion regarding the naturalization policy for Indonesian national football team players, as reflected in public responses on the social media platform X. The issue has triggered substantial societal division, driven by conflicting values between nationalist ideals supporting local player development and pragmatic aspirations for immediate competitive improvement through foreign-born players. This research aims to analyze how such polarization forms, spreads, and intensifies within the comment section of the @idextratime account. Using a qualitative approach and Krippendorff’s content analysis method, this study applied unitizing, coding, and inference drawing procedures to 2,419 comments collected from March 2024 to May 2025. Comments were categorized into Pro, Con, and Neutral based on conceptual indicators of opinion direction. The findings reveal a strong and consistent polarization, with 1,088 Pro comments, 866 Con comments, and 545 Neutral comments. The Pro cluster emphasizes performance enhancement and strategic realism, while the Con cluster highlights concerns over national identity, youth development, and long term football structure. Interactions exhibit limited deliberation, prevalent emotional expressions, and the formation of echo chambers that reinforce group based thinking, aligning with Sunstein's concept of group polarization. A unique finding identifies a “Con-Analytical” subgroup offering criticisms accompanied by constructive recommendations. This study concludes that polarization in this context reflects a deeper tension between short-term performance demands and long-term national development goals. The research contributes to understanding digital discourse on sports policy and demonstrates how algorithm-driven platforms amplify value-based social conflicts.
