Abstract
The phenomenon of strong patriarchal culture in Indonesian society is also reproduced through the media, including films. Sunil Soraya's Diary of the Son-in-Law was chosen because it shows the dynamics of the relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law in a Batak family that is full of patriarchal values. The social reality of Indonesian society is still strongly influenced by the patriarchal system, where women are often placed in subordinate positions, even through popular media such as movies. This research aims to analyze how patriarchal culture and sexism are internalized. This study uses a qualitative approach with John Fiske's semiotics method, which divides the analysis into three levels of meaning: reality, representation, and ideology. Data was collected through observation of scenes, dialogue, character expressions, costumes, and cinematography techniques used in the film. The results of the study show that the patriarchal culture in this film is represented through the dominance of mothers-in-law over their daughters-in-law, the strengthening of women's domestic roles, and the inheritance of patriarchal values between generations. At the ideological level, this film reveals how women are not only victims but also perpetrators in preserving the patriarchal system through internalized sexism. In conclusion, this film not only reflects the social conditions of patriarchal society but also serves as a critique of the gender structure that still restricts women's freedom in domestic spaces. Keywords: Internalized Sexism, Patriarchy, Representation, John Fiske's Semiotics.
