Abstract
The development of historical tourism is currently required not only to deliver information, but also to provide experiences that are engaging and easily understood by different generations. Conventional methods of presenting history are often considered less effective, particularly for younger generations. Tugu Pahlawan Surabaya, as a historical icon, presents theatrical performances that combine elements of art, culture, and history. However, studies that examine the role of theatrical performances as a medium for cross-cultural communication and educational tourism remain limited. This research aims to analyze the role of theatrical performances at Tugu Pahlawan in supporting cross-cultural communication and their contribution to the development of historical educational tourism in Surabaya. This study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through non-participant observation, in-depth interviews with performers and visitors, and documentation of theatrical activities. Data analysis was conducted using Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT) to examine forms of communication adjustment between performers and audiences across different generations. The results indicate that theatrical performances function as an effective medium of cultural communication. The interactive and emotional presentation of history helps bridge generational differences. The Roode Brug Surabaya community presents performances based on historical reconstruction, while Front Kolosal Surabaya delivers colossal drama incorporating ludruk elements that are more communicative and closely connected to local culture. The study concludes that theatrical performances enhance the appeal of historical educational tourism and strengthen cross-cultural communication at Tugu Pahlawan.
