Abstract

Surabaya is the second-largest city in Indonesia after Jakarta, with a population of 2,880,284 people from diverse ethnic, racial, and religious backgrounds. This diversity is reflected in the numerous houses of worship across the city, including churches for the Christian community. Surabaya is home to 700 churches serving 256,644 Protestant Christians, one of the denominations being the Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA). To date, there are 15 organized SDA churches in Surabaya with a total membership of 2,442. As an international religious organization headquartered in Maryland, USA, the SDA Church relies heavily on English as a global language for communication among its members worldwide. Despite this, there is currently no SDA church in Surabaya that facilitates worship services in English. This lack of facilities limits the church's ministry, particularly for expatriate members who do not speak the local language, members who wish to worship in English, and the implementation of headquarters' programs. In response to these challenges, an International Seventh-day Adventist Church has been designed using a symbolic architectural approach. By employing this approach, the building is expected to serve as a medium to express the denomination's identity and become an icon for the SDA Church in Surabaya.
