Abstract

Hollywood beauty standards have long shaped the way women are perceived within the entertainment industry and society at large. The Substance (2024) presents a narrative about the aesthetic pressures experienced by women, particularly concerning aging and bodily performance. This study aims to analyze how Hollywood beauty standards are constructed in The Substance (2024) using John Fiske’s semiotic approach. The research employs a qualitative method through Fiske’s three levels of semiotics, which include the level of reality, the level of representation, and the ideological level. The findings show that the film represents beauty as a quality associated with a youthful, proportional body free from signs of aging, positioning such traits as requirements for social value, visibility, and power. The film reveals that beauty is not a natural attribute, but a cultural construction reinforced by media and capitalist systems, thus encouraging the objectification and regulation of women’s bodies. Therefore, The Substance offers a critique of Hollywood beauty hegemony and highlights the psychological and social consequences of these pressures on women’s identity and agency. Keywords: Representation, Hollywood Beauty Standards, Feminism, Film Analysis, Semiotics
