Abstract
Trains as an environmentally friendly mode of transportation require an optimal maintenance system to ensure smooth operations. The air system in locomotives plays a vital role in powering the braking mechanism, horn, wipers, cooling system, and sanding system. Failure of these components has the potential to cause operational disruptions and endanger passenger safety. This study was conducted to detect and analyze potential failures in the air system of CC 201/203 locomotives at the Sidotopo Locomotive Depot by applying the FMEA approach. Data collection took place over four months (February-May 2024) through direct observation in the field, discussions with maintenance technicians, and documentation of the maintenance process. Risk assessment was calculated using the RPN formula, which considers severity, occurrence, and detection. Based on the evaluation of the five main components, a critical RPN value of 15.6 was obtained as the priority threshold for treatment. The findings show that the sand channel recorded the highest RPN value of 24, where blockages caused by wet sand clumping were the main cause of wheel traction loss. The second component requiring intensive attention is the compressor inlet seal with an RPN value of 18, which has experienced material degradation due to continuous use and inadequate replacement component quality standards, resulting in system air pressure leaks. Meanwhile, the horn membrane, sand storage box, and cooling tank each received an RPN value of 12. The proposed corrective actions include: periodic inspection accompanied by cleaning of the sand distribution line to ensure that the material remains dry; a planned replacement program for compressor seals using high-quality components; preventive maintenance of the horn membrane to avoid dust accumulation; consistent monitoring of sand volume; and routine inspection of the cooling tank to prevent corrosion. The application of the FMEA method has proven its effectiveness in identifying high-risk components and systematically prioritizing maintenance measures. The results of this study are expected to contribute significantly to improving the operational reliability of locomotives and maintaining safety standards at PT. KAI (Persero).
