Abstract

This preliminary plant design proposes the establishment of a Bleaching Earth production facility using bentonite and the acid activation process, aimed at meeting the increasing demand of Indonesia’s vegetable oil and mineral oil refining industries. Bleaching Earth plays a critical role in the bleaching stage due to its ability to adsorb pigments, contaminants, and other impurities. Currently, a significant portion of national demand is met through imports; therefore, a domestic plant with a production capacity of 60,000 tons per year is expected to reduce import dependency and strengthen industrial self-sufficiency. The plant is designed to operate continuously for 24 hours per day over 330 operating days per year. Bentonite is used as the primary raw material, with Na-bentonite selected due to its naturally high montmorillonite content and good adsorption performance. Although naturally active, Na-bentonite still requires acid activation using sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) to enhance surface area, cation exchange capacity, and overall adsorption capability. The activation process includes mixing, heating, agitation, washing, and drying. The final product is then dried, milled, and classified to meet industrial specifications. The process design emphasizes high efficiency, minimal energy consumption, and controlled environmental impact through proper wastewater and gas treatment systems. Key design parameters include a production capacity of 60,000 tons/year, plant area of 24,964 m², and location in Manyar, Gresik, East Java. The total fixed capital investment is estimated at Rp999.69 billion, with a working capital requirement of Rp106.73 billion. Annual raw material and utility costs are estimated at Rp311.81 billion and Rp3.21 billion, respectively, while projected annual revenue reaches Rp1.19 trillion. Economic evaluation indicates favorable feasibility, with a pre-tax ROI of 39.54%, post-tax ROI of 29.65%, payback period of 3 years 8 months, IRR of 23.14%, and BEP of 20.50%. Overall, the proposed plant demonstrates strong technical and economic potential to support domestic Bleaching Earth supply and add value to local bentonite resources.
