Abstract
Mononitrotoluene is an aromatic organic compound consisting of three isomers and has the molecular formula C₇H₇NO₂. This compound is a yellow, odorless liquid and is non-polar, making it insoluble in water. Mononitrotoluene is widely used across various industrial sectors, including as an intermediate agent in the production of dyes and pigments, as a raw material for the synthesis of polymer antioxidants, and as an intermediate in the manufacture of certain active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Its extensive applications indicate that the demand for mononitrotoluene in Indonesian industries continues to grow. However, domestic demand is still met through imports, while no export activities have yet been conducted. Therefore, the establishment of a mononitrotoluene plant within the country is necessary to meet domestic industrial needs and to support national foreign-exchange development. The selected production method is the continuous nitration of toluene using mixed acid, as it offers higher reaction efficiency, operational stability, and more consistent product quality compared with batch processing. Additionally, this method provides greater flexibility in adjusting production capacity to accommodate fluctuations in industrial demand.
