Abstract
A Propylene Glycol plant with a capacity of 60,000 tons per year will be established in the Dumai Industrial Area (KID), Dumai City, Riau. The plant will operate 24 hours a day and 330 days per year. This Propylene Glycol plant uses glycerol as the main raw material, supplied by PT. Wilmar Bioenergi Indonesia, and hydrogen from PT. Samator Indonesia Industri, as well as air, with the help of a copper chromite catalyst. Propylene Glycol is used as a fragrance ingredient in the cosmetic and basic chemical industries because it has a sweet aroma, such as in soap and body care product manufacturing. Propylene Glycol can be produced from several types of raw materials, such as glycerol and sorbitol. In the glycerol-based process, glycerol is dehydrated in a packed-bed reactor at 240°C, producing acetol and water. The acetol is then reacted with hydrogen in a 1:1 ratio at 190°C before being fed into the packed-bed reactor. The reactor produces two phases: the gas phase, which is hydrogen, and the liquid phase, which contains propylene glycol along with unreacted acetol. The liquid phase is fed into a distillation column to separate propylene glycol from impurities such as acetol and water, producing 99.8% purity propylene glycol, which is then stored in a storage tank at 30°C.
