Abstract
The batik industry is one of Indonesia’s most important sectors, yet its production process generates wastewater containing high levels of synthetic dyes, Total Suspended Solids (TSS), and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD). These pollutants can cause severe water contamination, decrease water quality, and inhibit aquatic photosynthesis. Therefore, an effective and environmentally friendly wastewater treatment method is requiredThis study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the combination of electrocoagulation and adsorption processes in reducing color, Total Suspended Solids (TSS), and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) levels in batik industry wastewater. The electrocoagulation process used aluminum electrodes with current variations of 1–5 A and contact times ranging from 30 to 150 minutes, followed by adsorption using activated carbon as the adsorbent. Parameters analyzed included color, TSS, and COD. The results showed that the electrocoagulation–adsorption combination effectively reduced color concentration by up to 99%, TSS by 98%, and COD by 98% under optimal conditions (4–5 A current and 150 minutes contact time). ANOVA analysis indicated that contact time had a more significant effect than current strength on the reduction efficiency of all tested parameters. Overall, the combined electrocoagulation–adsorption method proved to be effective, Keywords: electrocoagulation, adsorption, batik wastewater, COD, TSS, color
