Abstract
Sodium chlorate is an essential chemical widely used in various industries. In the pulp and paper sector, it serves as the primary precursor for chlorine dioxide production used in bleaching processes. It also acts as an intermediate for synthesizing other chlorate and perchlorate compounds. Due to its broad industrial applications, the future demand for sodium chlorate is projected to increase, providing a strong basis for establishing a sodium chlorate production facility in Indonesia. This plant is planned to operate in 2030 at the JIIPE Gresik industrial estate with a production capacity of 50,000 tons per year, operating 330 days annually and employing 230 personnel. The production process begins with dissolving 97% industrial salt using process water to form brine, followed by impurity removal in a clarifier using BaCl₂ as the coagulant. The clarified brine is conditioned to pH 6.8 using hydrochloric acid and treated with Na₂Cr₂O₇ as a corrosion inhibitor before entering the electrolyzer at 75 °C to form sodium chlorate. Subsequent processing involves solid–liquid separation via a rotary drum vacuum filter, concentration in an evaporator (28% to 75%), and cooling crystallization at 30°C. The crystallized product is separated using a centrifuge, dried in a rotary dryer at 46°C, milled to 80 mesh, and finally stored in the product silo. This design study demonstrates the technical feasibility of sodium chlorate production to meet increasing national industrial demand.
