Abstract

This study investigates the synthesis of silica membranes supported on α-alumina flat-disk substrates for bio-CNG (CO₂/CH₄) purification applications. The membranes were prepared using the sol–gel method with TEOS (tetraethyl orthosilicate) as the precursor and CTAB (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) as the templating agent. The aim of this research is to evaluate the effects of varying CTAB concentrations on the resulting pore size of the silica membrane, assess the influence of different drying temperatures, and determine the optimal membrane performance based on XRD, SEM-EDX, and gas permeation analyses. CTAB concentrations of 0.01 M, 0.03 M, 0.05 M, 0.07 M, and 0.09 M were applied, combined with drying temperatures of 80°C, 90°C, 100°C, 110°C, and 120°C. The results indicate that increasing CTAB concentration leads to more ordered pore structures and enhances methane (CH₄) flux in gas permeation tests. A drying temperature of 120°C produces a stable membrane structure with uniform pore distribution and minimal cracking. XRD analysis confirms the formation of silica with characteristic peaks, while SEM-EDX mapping reveals a homogeneous distribution of silica across the substrate surface. The membrane prepared using 0.05 M CTAB and a drying temperature of 120°C exhibits the best performance for CO₂/CH₄ separation. Therefore, the synthesized silica membranes show strong potential for application in bio-CNG (CO₂/CH₄) purification to enhance methane (CH₄) content as an environmentally friendly renewable energy source
