Abstract
This study aims to understand how social penetration is formed and developed among Bumble users, especially Generation Z, through the Bumble dating app. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study involved eight Bumble user informants who were interviewed in-depth to examine their experiences in their interpersonal communication. The main concept used in this study is the concept of Social Penetration. This theory explains how interpersonal relationships develop through stages of self-disclosure, which begins with the orientation stage, affective exploration, affective exchange, and ends with the stable exchange stage. This theory is useful in the context of digital interactions such as Bumble, because it helps understand how users build trust, foster emotional closeness, and build relationships without face-to-face interaction. The results of this study indicate that although the Bumble app facilitates initial introductions and communication, the formation of more intimate relationships is highly dependent on self-disclosure, trust, consistent communication, and individual emotional readiness. Most interactions fail when they reach the affective or stable exchange stage described in Social Penetration Theory. The conclusion of this study is that internal factors, such as limited self-disclosure, inability to communicate consistently, and unrealistic expectations, often hinder the process of social penetration among Generation Z users on the Bumble app. The quality and sustainability of interpersonal relationships depend heavily on an individual's ability to build trust, be supportive, and be open.
