Abstract
Manten Sub-watershed is a tributary of Brantas Watershed located in Tajinan, Poncokusumo, Wajak, and Bululawang Districts, Malang Regency. According to the Integrated Brantas Watershed Management Plan in 2011, there are land degradation problems in the Manten Sub-watershed area due to improper land management. The purpose of this research is to identify the soil physical quality index in the Manten Sub-watershed area along with its improvement alternatives. The research uses descriptive quantitative method by calculating the results of parameters such as bulk density, particle density, texture, structure, porosity, permeability, and soil organic carbon using the Soil Physic Quality Index (SPQI) formula. Based on the analysis results on all land use types in the Manten Sub-watershed, dryland farming and rice fields are classified as moderate to fairly good with SPQI values of 0.57–0.73 for dryland farming and 0.63–0.70 for rice fields. Meanwhile, plantation land use shows a fairly good classification with SPQI values of 0.70–0.73. Improvement alternatives to optimize the physical soil quality in the Manten Sub-watershed include adding organic materials to the soil and applying conservative soil management practices such as wise tillage, cover cropping, and crop rotation.
