Abstract

TikTok has become one of the most widely used social media platforms for self-expression, particularly through dance trends that are massively followed by its users. One account that has gained attention is @gana_buna, which features dance content performed by a young boy and has generated diverse responses from the audience. Some viewers perceive the boy as having talent in dancing, while others consider his movements to be too graceful and feminine, thus interpreting them as contradicting the masculinity they understand. This study employs a qualitative approach using Stuart Hall’s reception analysis theory to examine how audiences interpret the dance content, categorized into three readings: dominant-hegemonic, negotiated, and oppositional. The research data were collected through in-depth interviews with 10 TikTok users. The findings reveal that the dance content of @gana_buna contributes to shaping audience perceptions of the boy’s gender identity. Nevertheless, most audiences tend to view the content as a form of expression facilitated by the boy’s mother to channel his talent and hobby, without associating it with masculinity or perceiving it as an act of resistance against masculinity.
