Abstract

This Formaldehyde Plant is designed with a production capacity of 65,000 tons per year and will be constructed in East Kalimantan, specifically in the Kaltim Industrial Estate (KIE), Jl. Pupuk Raya, Bontang Industrial Area, Guntung, Bontang City, East Kalimantan 75321. The plant uses methanol supplied by PT. Metanol Kaltim Industri and air as raw materials. Formaldehyde is widely used as a raw material for the production of formic acid, resins, and other chemical compounds, and also serves as a preservative. Additionally, formaldehyde is used as a raw material in the production of 1,4-butanediol. The formaldehyde production process using the BASF Process utilizes methanol and air with the aid of a silver catalyst. In brief, liquid methanol is vaporized in a vaporizer to convert it into gas. Meanwhile, air is taken from the environment using a blower. The methanol and air mixture is then heated to 700°C before entering the reactor. The reactor operates at 700°C and 1 atm, employing a fixed-bed multitube reactor containing silver catalyst. Inside the reactor, dehydrogenation and partial oxidation reactions occur to produce formaldehyde. The reaction products are then separated in an absorber, where formaldehyde is absorbed using water. Inert gases exit from the top of the absorber, while liquid-phase formaldehyde exits from the bottom and is stored in storage tanks.
