Abstract

Centrifugal compressors have a crucial role in many industries, such as power plants, oil and gas, by increasing fluid pressure through the centrifugal force of the impeller rotation. This research analyzes and evaluates the performance of a 7-stage centrifugal compressor by varying the blade speed and flow rate. This experiment uses an experimental approach by testing the YS 0042 7-stage centrifugal compressor demonstration unit at the Energy Conversion Laboratory of Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jawa Timur. The testing was conducted with impeller speed variations ranging from 450 RPM to 1350 RPM and valve opening variations of 50%, 75%, and 100%. The collected data, including pressure, temperature, and mass flow rate, were then processed using Microsoft Excel to calculate and analyze performance compressor. The results showed that increasing blade speed consistently increased the compression ratio, with the highest compression ratio recorded at 1,023 at 1350 RPM with a valve opening of 50%. Conversely, isentropic efficiency tended to decrease with increasing blade speed and valve opening. The highest efficiency point reached 67% at 550 RPM with a valve opening of 50%. Power analysis also showed that the power required was directly proportional to the blade speed but decreased slightly with increasing valve opening due to reduced flow resistance.
