Abstract

The Acetanilide Plant from Aniline and Acetic Anhydride with a Crystallization Process, having a capacity of 80,000 tons/year, will be established in the Karanganyar Industrial Area, Jalan Beji Kulon, Kemiri, Kebakkramat District, Karanganyar Regency, Central Java. The plant will operate 24 hours a day, 330 days a year. The raw materials used are Aniline, Benzene, and Acetic Anhydride. Acetanilide is a relatively economical commodity, considering both raw material and product transportation costs. It is also an important raw material in several chemical industries, particularly as an intermediate in the pharmaceutical industry for antipyretic and analgesic drugs. In addition, acetanilide is used as an auxiliary material in the manufacture of dyes and rubber. Briefly, the process description of the acetanilide plant is as follows: Aniline is first dissolved in benzene, then fed into the reactor to react with acetic anhydride. The reactor operates at 120°C, 1 atm pressure, for 6 hours. The reactor produces two output streams. The overhead product consists of benzene vapor, which separates naturally due to differences in boiling points, and water that is condensed in a condenser. The bottom product of the reactor is fed into a decolorizer tank to clarify the acetanilide solution using activated carbon. The acetanilide solution is then fed into a rotary drum vacuum filter to separate the acetanilide solution from the activated carbon. The clarified acetanilide solution is then fed into a crystallizer for crystallization, while the activated carbon is sent to the waste treatment unit for regeneration. After crystallization, the mixture of crystals and mother liquor is fed into a centrifuge to separate them. The wet acetanilide crystals are then sent to a rotary dryer for drying, cooled on a cooling conveyor, and ground to a uniform size of 100 mesh using a ball mill. The uniform acetanilide crystals are finally transferred to the acetanilide silo.
