Abstract
The batik industry generates wastewater containing heavy metals such as Cadmium (Cd), which poses a significant environmental threat if untreated. Phytoremediation using hyperaccumulator plants offers an eco-friendly and cost-effective solution. This study evaluates the effectiveness of Water Jasmine (Echinodorus palaefolius) and Genjer (Limnocharis flava) in reducing Cd levels in batik wastewater and examines the influence of plant density and retention time on the removal process. Experiments were conducted using batch reactors with variations in retention time (days 5, 10, 15, and 20) and plant density (medium and high). Cd concentration before and after treatment, along with plant morphological changes, were analyzed descriptively and statistically using Two-Way ANOVA Without Replication. Results showed that retention time significantly affected Cd reduction in both Water Jasmine and Genjer (p < 0.05), with the highest removal observed on day 5 and a sharp decline by day 20. Plant density had no statistically significant effect (p > 0.05). Genjer exhibited slightly higher Cd removal than Water Jasmine, though both plants adapted well to contaminated conditions. In conclusion, retention time is the primary factor influencing phytoremediation efficiency, and both Water Jasmine and Genjer provide an effective and environmentally sustainable option for treating Cd-contaminated batik wastewater.
