Abstract

Surabaya, as one of Indonesia’s major cities with a significant contribution to the national creative economy sector, continues to experience rapid growth in the creative industry. According to data from BEKRAF, this sector contributed 7.44% to the national GDP in 2023, with Surabaya recording an annual growth rate of 8%. However, supporting facilities such as Creative Centers in Surabaya remain limited compared to other cities. To sustain this growth, there is a need for an integrated, functional, and environmentally friendly space for creative economy practitioners. The design of the Surabaya Creative Center adopts a sustainable architectural approach that integrates creativity and sustainability. This project aims to provide comprehensive facilities for key creative subsectors such as culinary arts, fashion, crafts, and performing arts, while also enhancing the productivity of creative economy actors. The design approach refers to the principles of sustainable architecture: Economy of Resources, Life Cycle Design, and Humane Design, and employs the Force-Based Framework method to identify and respond architecturally to site-specific needs. The design outcome adopts the concept “Sustainable Spaces for Creative Growth.” This theme emphasizes the integration of sustainability principles with the encouragement of creative growth, particularly within the context of Surabaya's creative economy. It prioritizes energy efficiency, environmental impact reduction, and user comfort. The architectural concept supports flexibility in form and creativity in spatial expression, while maintaining a strong connection with the surrounding environment. The uniqueness of the building lies in its ability to transform both visually and functionally, providing space for dynamic design exploration. The strategic use of openings not only strengthens the connection between interior and exterior spaces but also creates a spatial experience that harmonizes with nature. Keywords: Surabaya Creative Center, sustainable architecture, creative economy, collaboration, sustainability
