Abstract

LoRa is one of the most widely used communication technologies in the Internet of Things (IoT) due to its ability to cover long distances with low power consumption. However, the main challenge in long-range wireless communication is data loss caused by noise, interference, and physical obstacles, especially under Non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS) conditions. One approach to address this issue is the application of Forward Error Correction (FEC), a technique that adds redundancy codes so that corrupted data can be automatically corrected without the need for retransmission. This study compares two FEC algorithms, namely Hamming (7,4) and Reed-Solomon [RS(39,31) and RS(46,35)], against a baseline system without FEC. The implementation uses the LoRa SX1262 module and ESP32-S3FN8 microcontroller, with experiments conducted under Line-of-Sight (LoS) and NLoS scenarios at distances of 150 m, 250 m, and 350 m. The results indicate that applying FEC successfully reduces Packet Loss Rate (PLR) and Bit Error Rate (BER) compared to the system without FEC. The Hamming algorithm performs best under LoS conditions, offering shorter processing time despite an overhead of approximately 50%. In contrast, the Reed-Solomon algorithm demonstrates superior performance in NLoS conditions by maintaining lower PLR and BER, with overheads of 24.2% (RS(39,31)) and 35.8% (RS(46,35)). Overall, FEC optimization enhances the reliability of LoRa communication, with algorithm selection recommended based on transmission environment characteristics.
