Abstract
Organic fertilizers, both solid and liquid, play a crucial role in sustainable agriculture, and understanding the dynamics of their fermentation processes is essential. This study investigates changes in temperature, pH, chemical characteristics (organic carbon, ammonium, nitrate, and phosphate), and microbial populations during the fermentation of organic fertilizers made from tofu dregs and sugarcane bagasse, with varying ratios of cow manure. Observations were conducted over an 8-week period, with weekly measurements of temperature and pH, and biweekly analyses of chemical content and microbial populations. The temperature data showed a decline in the final week for both types of fertilizers, indicating the maturation phase. Liquid fertilizers tended to exhibit higher temperatures due to more optimal microbial activity in liquid media. The pH dynamics revealed that solid fertilizers remained in the neutral-to-alkaline range (pH 6.0–7.5), while liquid fertilizers were more acidic (pH 3.5–5.0), due to anaerobic fermentation producing organic acids. Chemical analyses indicated that tofu dregs consistently resulted in higher levels of organic carbon and ammonium, particularly at manure ratios of 1:5 and 1:7.5. This was attributed to the high protein and complex organic carbon content in tofu dregs. In contrast, sugarcane bagasse showed greater potential for increasing phosphate availability, with optimal results observed at 1:5 and 1:7.5 ratios. This was supported by its lignocellulosic content, which can absorb and gradually release phosphate. Microbial population patterns demonstrated an adaptation phase (weeks 1–3), a peak phase (weeks 4–5), and a decline phase (week 6 onwards), indicating optimal fermentation activity within the 3–5 week range. The relationship between organic carbon and ammonium in both solid and liquid fertilizers showed a quadratic pattern, where increased ammonium concentrations were positively correlated with organic carbon content up to a certain threshold, reflecting efficient organic decomposition processes. This study concludes that the characteristics of raw materials and fermentation methods significantly influence the quality of the resulting organic fertilizers, providing a foundation for the development of more effective fertilizer formulations.
